March 24-25 Babel-LGT-CC

Date of work: March 24 and 25
Number of workers :1 (Jim de Friess)
Time spent: 7 hours- includes commute
Work done: Hiked down Babel Tower performing light clipping, turned south on LGT continuing my light clipping.  Camped at Sandy Flats, cut one tree across the trail near camp.  Continued the next day lightly clipping along LGT south of Sandy Flats.  Came to the area in the photos above, 7 trees across trail in about 125'.  I numbered them such that "3" in one picture is the same tree as in the other picture.  At least three of these were across the trail prior to the awarded LGT improvement project.  To get there go down Conley Cove Head north- where the terrain becomes steep (some people call it the crag) it is just beyond there.

Any help on that would be good.  I went around it on the uphill side, but noticed Poison Ivy vines on the rocks.  I hope to camp there and work the trees/look for routes around etc.

On the way up Conley I improved the crossing of the two big trees down on the lower part.  The one blocking the switchback (twice) needs tread work in the bypass.

LGT has been checked from DF to Babel, and the worst part- is the above mentioned.

I did have a great time though.

PI-LGT-CC trails

Date of work : mar 16-17
time spent: 9 hours
number of workers : 1 Jim de Friess

Work accomplished: Removed major obstructions along PI, LGT, ant CC
trails, clipped a little as I walked on lgt and cc with shears.
Couldn't tell any tread work had been done on lgt between cc and pi,
still some steep difficult areas.

2 hard to cross trees on lower cc, and a third at a switchback
blocking it twice. 2' in diameter plus all three. I did put a foot
notch in the lowest one,.

dates of work March 9 and 10
number of workers: 1- Jim de Friess
time spent:  I'd say about 5 hours total of actual work, I mostly just worked where the trail needed clearing.

Work accomplished:  Took pulaski and loppers for trip to DF, I knew there was about 100 feet of the original trail blocked, and people were getting around it to the river side.  I cleared obstructions on the way in and then that section of trail.  I also did some xlearing on the way out.

South RJ - near the road

Date of work: Feb. 5, 2012
Number of workers: 1 Jim de Friess
Time spent: 4 hours - includes commute
Work done: Upper south end of RJ, I cut down 5 trees and worked on or built 10 waterbars.  I only worked down to sitting rock (1/3 of the way to the cliffs).

There was one particular tree across the trail, a big maple - hard as rock and waist high.  The bases of these trees however are rotten so they break off at ground level.  Since another even bigger one was leaning unfavorably I decided to cut it down too.  Most of the other leaning trees were rotten and ready, I only cut the the rotten leaners.

I've had a great two days in the woods.
